Sheer Misery
My car is broken down, and the replacement part is over $300. Supposedly there is some kind of Chevy lifetime guarantee on the piece, but Chevy is trying to convince me that this only applies to the lifespan of a fruit fly and that I will have to pay for the parts and labor. I don’t have an appointment until Saturday, and I’m hoping they can fix the problem (a valve that they replaced twice before is broken… again).
Today marked the first day of biking to work in the slush and rain. I was impressed at the amount of misery that can be concentrated into only 30 minutes. Quite frankly, the whole experience sucked. But it’s going to continue at least through the rest of this week. I guess it’s a good thing I had yesterday off. This morning, I didn’t bring gloves; that was a big mistake. By the time I got to work, I couldn’t feel my fingers. I stopped using the brake after two tries, because the metal just sucked the heat right out of my hands. It was pretty cold, and there were flurries. As bad as the ride to work was, however, the ride home was worse. Instead of riding on a bike in the cold, now I was riding on a cold, wet bike, on a cold, rainy night. Fortunately, I had brought a change of clothes in my gym bag and had forgotten to take my wristbands out (I always wear wristbands when I play basketball… ok, I’m a dork). So I wrapped the wristbands around my fingers, turned on my dinky blinking bike lights, and set off for home. I think the bands saved my fingers, but I’m definitely bringing real gloves tomorrow. I was just drenched and miserable by the time I got home. I also have very little food and clean laundry now, so it should be an interesting week.
In better news, my friend Velius informed me that my computer was shipped today, and should arrive on Friday. I had originally ordered a PC from ABS (which wasn’t even scheduled to be shipped until Friday), but Velius informed me that he could hook me up with a comparable unit from Directron. It cost about $20 less and had twice as much RAM, a better video card, and a complementary headset-microphone thingey. I’m really grateful, and this is one of the few things that I’m looking forward to this week (besides having a car, food, and clean clothes again).
