Good News and Bad News
The Good News: There’s nothing wrong with Sydney’s peepee mechanism.
The Bad News: There’s nothing wrong with Sydney’s peepee mechanism.
I went to the vet yesterday, and it was very conveniently located; I think it’s less than 2 miles away from the condo. Sydney got checked out and was told not to gain anymore weight. The analysis of his urine detected no elevated white cell counts, no rod or circullar buggies, and few crystals (the small ones detected may have formed just from letting the urine sit). This led the vet to conclude that there is very little chance that Sydney’s recent floor-peeing is being caused by a medical reason. Therefore, the problem can’t be fixed with a shot of some antibiotics.
Unfortunately, I can’t just have Sydney fill out a survey telling me exactly what he wants in a litter box, so it’s experimentation time. The vet recommended an open litter box as an alternative, but when I tried that, Sydney kicked 80% of the litter out of the box before he went in. He did decide to eventually go in the open box, but only after scratching out a bare area. This leads me to believe that he has suddenly developed a taste for peeing on hard flat surfaces instead of sandy surfaces.
I went back with the covered litter box and emptied all the old litter out. I put in some bland, fine-grain clumping litter, but only put in just enough. This should allow him to move all the litter to one side and allow him to pee directly on the bottom of the litter box. We’ll see if my initial theory… pans out.

Oh, Sydney’s problems can be fixed by a shot alright, just not of antibiotics.
Maybe it is a good thing you never got those kittens…
BTW even hunters can miss with ranged attacks.
